Grandma’s House

There’s something about going to my Grandma’s house – drinking tea and admiring her garden – that make me feel a little more girly and a little more dainty than usual. So when I finally gave in to the uncontrollable urge to buy this dress, I knew there was only one place I wanted to shoot it.

Of course, girly-ness reaches a point of discomfort with me. So I had to rough up the look with touches of black, the beat up sneakers, and the velvet choker. Usually, I’m hesitant to toss around black accents with a summery outfit – they can come across as harsh and can ruin an outfit in a second.

But I tried adding the accents to the top and bottom while avoiding the creation of a stark divide across the dress (ie: a big black belt) and I think it worked! The black draws the eyes around the look without overpowering it.

The other accents were natural. The braid prevents overpowering the neck area (imagine my hair, the straps, and the choker – a disaster in the making) in what’s supposed to be a light look. Meanwhile, the rose-gold sunglasses are a subtle way to bring in some color and shine.

The teacup is half for fun and half for my caffeine fix.

Summer Makeup Routine

IMG_8137IMG_8146I’ve never been particularly obsessed with makeup. Winged liner, deep lips, and defined brows have always had a tendency to make me feel out of place in my own skin, and a former, foolish me used to think that engaging with beauty products automatically implied intensity.

But this summer I’ve discovered a couple of beauty gurus on Youtube, and together they have helped me develop my own beauty look that keeps it natural and fun at the same time.

So, without further ado, my makeup routine!

Glossier Priming Moisturizer, Perfecting Skin Tint, and Stretch Concealer

1: Face Base

I start light on the face. This is not only a result of my adversity to the discomfort I feel under a full face of makeup, but also my skin’s horrible tendency to breakout as soon as something heavier than air touches it. I use Glossier’s products because I love the lightness and wearability of them – they’re the least makeup-y makeup I know of!

The moisturizer is self-explanatory – but the priming quality of it is a huge help to keeping my look on all day! (At this point in time I also use lip balm on my lips, and usually that’s all I’ll do to them!)

The skin tint is like the anti-foundation. I would say there’s little to no coverage, but it adds an evenness and glow to my skin that enhances any natural look.

And the concealer is again, obvious. Gotta conceal those undereyes!

2: Go Glow

Bronzing has proven essential to a glowy complexion. I like to start with The Multiple stick by Nars in “South Beach” on the cheekbones and corners of the forehead. I like to compare it to liquid copper in terms of pigment, which makes it awesome for a touch of contouring and a lot of shimmer! I then round it out with some relatively matte bronzer. After that I set my whole face lightly with some loose powder.

3. Bright Eyes

For eyes, I keep it pretty basic with just a touch of all your basic eye makeup products. I first prime on the lid and inner corner. Then I ~usually~ pick two colors from my Naked Palette – darker for the outer lid, shimmery for the inner. I always use a super light fluffy brush for this to achieve a nicely light and blended look. Then I define with a touch of grey eyeliner and mascara!

Mario Badescu Facial Spray, Tocca Liliana Perfume, Jo Malone Red Roses Perfume

To finish off the look, I use this Mario Badescu facial spray (one of it’s purposes is to set) and add some scent with whatever perfume I’m feeling that day! (Right now it’s either Tocca’s Liliana or Jo Malone’s Red Roses).

Hope this gave you some sense of inspiration for a natural makeup look – I trust all these products with my life and I think you will too!

Purposeful Calm

With the summer here in Vancouver feeling more like a winter in California, I’ve recently been finding myself in the pursuit of calm rather than excitement. That said, I’ve also been struggling to find the right balance between sereneness and boredom.

I can happily now tell you that I have found the solution to my dilemma in the awe-inspiring nature of BC.

It’s no surprise – BC is famous for its enchanting temperate rainforests and chilled waters. Through getting better acquainted in my new environment, I have found the perfect marriage of adventurous and tranquil experiences.

IMG_3827 IMG_3828

Porteau Cove is one such destination where I find myself feeling not only unbelievably calm, but also that I’ve achieved something for the day. I’ve never been one for relaxing – I am one of those embarrassingly annoying people who has to always be doing something otherwise I turn into an anxious pile of mush – but that doesn’t mean I don’t need some rejuvenation every once in a while.

Of course, music is crucial for mood-setting. So here’s what I listen to when I’m attempting to achieve a purposeful sense of calm:

These jeans spoke to me on an emotional level, and despite their seeming lack of versatility, I had to have them. But, to my pleasant surprise, I have actually been able to style them a variety of ways! This has to be one of my favorites.

IMG_3806 IMG_3812

As you know, I’ve been a fan of denim on denim for a while now. I even published a post on how to make it your own! I love this short sleeved chambray shirt because it gives me the ability to do my beloved Canadian tuxedo look in the heat of the summer without melting into a big puddle of blue.

I also have to admit, all the blue denim I’ve been wearing these days really goes well with the environment here in Vancouver. Everything is either blue or green here – a refreshing look from my usual greys and browns in Montreal or my golds in California!
